                by William Wordsworth







My heart leaps up when i behold         
A rainbow in the sky:                         
So was it when my life began;              
So is it now I am a man;                                   
So be it when I shall grow old,              
Or let me die!                                    
The Child is father of the Man;             
And i could wish my days to be            
Bound each to each by natural piety.
·         The subject?
The subject in this poem is Nature and the theme is nature is the part of human life from child until old. The sentences : “My heart leaps up when i behold, A rainbow in the sky:”. It has meaning the joy in poet’s heart and feels when he behold the rainbows its like his experience when the poem was child. And sentences “So was it when my life began. So is it now i am a man;”. It has meaning from child until old the poet really like with rainbow or everything about nature cause he feels  the nature is a part of his life.


·         Figurative language?
a)   “My heart leaps up when i behold.” In the first line of poem, it’s use figurative language of Personification. Cause the poet describe that his heart was jump when he see the rainbow, but in the fact his heart not jump, he just really fell happy when he see the rainbow.
b) “rainbow.” In line two of poem, it’s use figurative language of symbol. The words rainbow is a symbol for nature as a whole.
c) “The child is a father of the man;” In line seven of poem, it’s use figurative language of paradox.  The poet describe two think which was different between child and man.
d) “natural piety”. It’s use figurative language of symbol. The words natural piety is a symbol for represent to the religion that is natural.

Ø  The sound and sense?
a) Sound :
·           Assonance : leaps and behold, was and when, am and man, me and die. The effec in this poem is to please the ear and to give emphasi.
·           Alliteration :  was and when. The effec in this poem is to make a little contribution to the meaning of the whole poem.
·           Rhyme :
My heart leaps up when i behold            a
A rainbow in the sky:                               b
So was it when my life began;                 c
So is it now I am a man;                           c
So be it when I shall grow old,                 a
Or let me die!                                           b
The Child is father of the Man;                c
And i could wish my days to be                d
Bound each to each by natural piety.      d
The effec in this poem is can be source of inspiration, it’s appeal to the reader’s memory and to please the ear and to give amphasi.
b) Sense : “My heart leaps up when i behold A rainbow in the sky:” The words behold use an image sense of see. Describe about the poet not just see the rainbow but he see the beauty of nature. The poet uses this image to express that he was born into a world of beauty.

·         The kind of this poem?
Ø    The kind of poem “My heart leaps up” by William Wordsworth  is Narrative poem. Narrative poem is a poem tells a story, and it may have some of the features of
a story. In other words, it may have a rising action in which a conflict develops,
a climax in which the conflict takes a trun, and falling action in which the conflict reaches a conclusion.

In this poem tell a story about man who was really love with nature.
·      In the first and two line is a introduction of this poem “My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky:” in this line the poet tell when he saw the rainbow his heart was jump, he really felling in love with nature.
·      The third until five line is the problem of this poem, “So was it when my life began; So is it now i am a man; So be it when I shall grow old,” the poet tell when he  was child, until now he was a man he really interesting with nature and when he shall grow old he still love with nature.
·      In line six, “Or let die!” its the climax of this poem. The poet tell, if he didn’t see the beautiful nature or rainbow he change be better to die.
·      Line seven until nine is the conclusion of this poem, “The child is father of the Man; And i could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety.” in this part, the poem just tell what he want, he want his days always see beautiful nature forever.
